The course uses a regional format, assembling and educating instructors and heads of refereeing selected by the member associations from neighbouring countries in a centralised venue.

FIFA Refereeing Development Officer Azimi Abdullah closed the fitness instructors’ course on Tuesday.

FIFA and AFC Referee Fitness Instructor Toshio Utsumi during the closing ceremony urged the participants to use the knowledge they had gained to work with the referees back home.

“Tell them and train them to understand that modern day refereeing involves a host of extremely technical skills. It demands a certain level of academic flair, high physical fitness, strong mental and psychological personalities and also excellent communication skills," said Utsumi.

FIFA works closely with the AFC through the former's Futuro III series of courses to improve all the important elements of football.
